Research

Hands-on science experience that underpins my writing and editing

Learning from the natural world

I've done a lot of scientific research on birds — following them through canals, up trees, and into the outback (not usually all at the same time) to learn about their biology and the habitats they live in. Along the way, I've gathered data on all sorts of organisms and ecosystems. Highlights include scooping up microplastics far out at sea, counting earthworms, purchasing a grocery store's entire stock of pantyhose to make instruments that measure groundwater, weighing powdered grass, and catching fish with meatballs.

Putting it all together

When the fieldwork fun is done, I collaborate with other scientists to analyze data, publish research papers, and apply for grants to fund new projects. It always comes back to more writing and editing!
